Mr. Jacob works in the White House Domestic Policy Council. He worked to create a compromise immigration bill that he hopes will pass the Senate in 2007.

TOPIC: Proposed Immigration Bill in the Senate

·        Our government gives green cards to 1.2 million people. Currently, 64% of immigrants who get green cards come because their family is already here. About 20% of the green cards are to people who are refugees or seeking asylum. The last 16% are given to people who come to the U.S. to work.

·        The proposed bill will increase the number of immigrants that are allowed to come for jobs and lower the number of immigrants coming to reunite with their family.

·        They have gotten more border security in the last six years, but building a fence will not work. It costs more money to deport illegal immigrants than to allow them to work in the U.S. legally.

·        One third of the 12 million illegal immigrants came to the U.S. legally through different types of visas. When they decided to stay after they are allowed to, that is when they become illegal.

·        Some people are willing to sell their identification like their name and their social security number for 100 dollars to illegal immigrants.

·        The reason why illegal immigrants come to the U.S. is because there are lots of jobs that Americans do not want to do, but immigrants are okay doing them. Some of these jobs are very hard work and only last a few months. Sometime these immigrants stay in the U.S. because it is too hard to go back to their country and try to come to the U.S. again.
